The Residential Community "Sala di Mosorrofa"

The Residential Community of Sala is situated between the briskly cooled hills of Reggio Calabria, in the township of Sala di Mosorrofa, approximately ten kilometres from the centre of the city. This Residential Community was one of the last to open after the closing of the Psychiatric Hospital of Reggio Calabria in the early years ‘90.

The township is easily reached by all publics services (bus, taxi etc.), that thoroughly and daily connect the township with the city. In the township of Mosorrofa there are available all necessary services (stores, bars, post office, etc.), thus permitting the patients of the Residential Community to live an interactional experience with the inhabitants of the township similar to a country like dimension.

The Coo.S.S.E.L. Co-operative, in contract with the A.S.L. 11 (National and Regional Health System), manages for the last ten years the psycho-social rehabilitation therapeutic program. In the Residential Community are accommodated approximately 23 patients, most with mental pathology. The average age of the patients is of approximately 55 years. The staff of the rehabilitation unit is composed of eight educators and a coordinator, who rotate in two six hour turns in the space of a 12 hours job service (hours 8-14 and 14-20) to sustain the rehabilitation programs.

The technical clinical staff of the co-operative is composed of a neuro-psychiatrist, psychologist supervisor, social worker and coordinator, all of whom meet weekly involving the rehabilitation staff workers on more operational levels; from the in-service training, to the supervision of the therapeutic psycho-social rehabilitation programs, to the drawing up of the treatment plans and the engagement and involvement of the patients in the individual and group program activities.

The rehabilitation programs of the Residential Community of Sala, and of all the Residential Communities that the Cooperative manages, is guided by a systems relational method based on the model by Mark Spivak.
